Parenting Sons who are under 5 (a brief guide) has been written to accompany our Raising Boys courses which are targeted at single mothers. This 28 page booklet aims to provide mothers with ideas and ways to support their sons and covers areas such as boundaries, discipline, risk-taking, role modeling and becoming a man. This is the first of a series of raising boys booklets, the next will be targeted at parents of 5-11 year-olds followed by 11-16. Please sign-up here if you want to hear about these when available. Why is it needed?
There is anecdotal evidence that there are a number of males recently arrived in the UK who find it difficult to read signals from females living here. There is also evidence to suggest that for some men who continue to act in the way they might in their mother country, they are likely to be arrested, and imprisoned (following women they like, for example). Also negotiating sex and condoms use is difficult with STI’s increasingly common, education is important to deliver.
What will it do? The pack contains exercises which are visually based for use with young men where English language and literacy may be an issue. It will help improve levels of knowledge in these young males on sexual health issues.

This booklet is aimed at new and expectant young fathers and provides some basic information to prepare them for fatherhood and also directs them to further information. It encourages inclusion of young fathers (especially in pre and post natal care) and highlights some of the many changes that fatherhood will bring to them and their family.
The profile of fathers is currently very high (and increasingly positive in terms of the contribution they can make towards their children), in contrast the perception of young fathers as irresponsible, feckless, immature and unable to support their families continues to dominate even professional workers view of them.
How to get this booklet.
The booklet is available from Working With Men at a cost of 60p each plus P&P by calling 0207 237 5353 or by emailing h.merry@workingwithmen.org
Set of four A2 full colour posters show young fathers engaging positively with their children. The text ‘it isn’t your age, it is what you do that counts’, aims to counter the view that being young will in itself stop you from being a good father. These images remove barriers that currently inhibit young father’s involvement in family life and show an inspiring representation of young fathers within the family unit. These posters will appeal to anyone who works with young people and especially those working within a predominantly male environment. Young fathers are too often invisible and when they are seen they are often thought to be irresponsible, feckless and immature. While some may fit this description, many others do not. These posters are available from Working With Men at a cost of £12.50 per set of 4 inc P&P by calling 0207 237 5353 or by emailing h.merry@workingwithmen.org or by using the online order form.

This booklet aims to highlight some of the many changes that fatherhood will bring to you and your family and will help you think about what being a father will involve. Most fathers have told us that while they recognised they needed to know and understand new things about becoming a father, they didn’t want to ask because they didn’t want to appear stupid and often wanted to find out information without asking anyone.
