About Working with Men

Who We Are

Our Vision - Our vision is that boys and men who are marginalised and excluded should receive good quality services that meet their sometimes conflicting and changing needs, so that they can play a full and constructive role in their communities and society.

Our Mission - To identify unmet need among marginalised and excluded boys and men, demonstrate how that need can be met, and influence and inspire mainstream services to start to address and meet the need.  In support of this mission we develop, deliver and disseminate services and resources for other agencies

Our Values - We enable individuals and organisations to understand masculinities and how their understanding affects them.
We believe that there are many ways to be male in our society and that this diversity needs to be welcomed and developed.
We believe that people who use our services can and should contribute to the development and dissemination of those services.
We are and want to be at the cutting edge of work with boys and men, and to continually push the boundaries of this work.
We help other organisations to embed and mainstream the projects and ideas we develop, and then we move on to develop new projects.
We use our experience and expertise to achieve a wider social impact from all our work.
We use the experience of our practice to inform our own development, and that of other agencies; and to inform policy makers about what works .
We believe in partnership work: we want and need to work with other people and other agencies to achieve our vision.
We value our staff and invest in their development.

What We Do

The ethos of Working With Men is to develop and implement support projects that benefit the development of men and boys, we also seek to raise awareness of issues impacting upon men and boys in addition to trying to gain a greater understanding of the underlying issues behind male behaviour.

We also undertake research, offer training and consultancy services, as well as resources, to aid practitioners and agencies who work with boys and/or men. Our key areas of work are in: fatherhood (including parenting and teenage fathers), health (including sexual health and mental well-being), education and underachievement, unemployment and training, violence and crime, transitions, and relationships and homelessness.

While most of our project work takes place in London and the South East, we work across England, as well as Wales, Scotland and successful projects in Northern Ireland.

We offer the following:

  • Partnerships to develop work with boys, young men and fathers (current partnerships exist with schools, Sure Starts and other voluntary organisations). See below.
  • A broad range of resources including packs, games, posters, books and other materials for those developing work with boys, young men and fathers. Based on the work we have done ourselves and in partnership with others See Resources
  • Training for those developing and those managing work, as well as those involved in policy development. See Training
  • The evaluation of work with boys, young men and fathers that helps agencies identify what they are achieving and how they can improve their practice. See Evaluation
  • Consultancy for an agency looking to develop or deliver projects targeting boys or men. See Consultancy

For consultancy, training and resources, we aim to be accessible to smaller, as well as larger, agencies and organisations.
